Total in Italy

Our businesses in Italy span the energy sector and are involved in Exploration & Production, Refining & Chemicals, Marketing & Services, Specialty Chemicals, Gas and Power, and New Energies.

Exploration & Production

Over the past 50 years, Total has been present in over 300 exploration licence or production licences in Italy. The Group has participated in the acquisition of more than 50.000 km of seismic lines and drilling of about 500 wells, including 200 as operator. Since January 1, 2010, the exploration and production activities were separated from Total Italia S.p.A. and brought to a new company, Total E&P Italia S.p.A., a subsidiary of Total Holdings Europe SAS.

Tempa Rossa

The Tempa Rossa field, located in the Southern Apennines, is the main activity of Total E&P Italia (operator, 50%), associated with Shell Italia E&P (25%) and Mitsui E&P Italia (25%).
Six wells were drilled and have been the subject of long term tests.
Tempa Rossa production will reach a plateau of 50.000 b/d. The field will also produce gas (230.000 m3/d), LPG and sulfur. The development of Tempa Rossa will contribute to an increase of of nearly 50% in the production of oil in Italy.
The project employs 350 Italian companies and suppliers, creating about 10,000 jobs of which over 2000 are located at the construction site in Basilicata.

Refining & Chemicals

  • Hutchinson manufactures and sells in Rivoli (Turin) parts for low-pressure fluid transfer and high pressure for the automotive industry. Moreover and through its subsidiary Gasket International, based in the Milan area, Hutchinson offers sealing elements for valves for the oil and gas market.
  • The Cray Valley Italia Sarl subsidiary is responsible for the production of hydroxylated polybutadiene on the Ravenna site and operates this site, belonging to the European Space Agency.

Marketing & Services

TotalErg (ERG 51% Total 49%) was created in 2010.
The network (2701 stations for 11% of market share) is restructuring and has launched new concepts such as TE24 and Area + to meet the specifics of a restructured market and not under strong competitive pressure. Service stations on motorways will be renewed in 2016 and 2017 in the context of bidding procedures for successive offers. General trade develops around Trecate and north Sigemi and around the oil terminal in Rome.
Our specialities are continuing to achieve profitable growth. Totalgaz has taken over part of Lampogas activities and lubricants are consolidating their positions and market share (> 12%).

  • Marine Lubricants (TotalErg) - The Lubmarine office Total Italy is hosted by TotalErg and functionally dependent Total Lubmarine Paris.
  • Total Aviazione Italia - Total Aviazione Italia (TAI non-consolidated subsidiary 100% of total M & S) was born from the separation of total aviation activities Italy, not transferred to the JV TotalErg. The subsidiary is present in the main Italian airports, including Rome Fiumicino and Milan Malpensa.
  • AS24 - AS24, a subsidiary of Total, It specialises in the distribution of fuels and services for road hauliers. The AS 24 network in Italy currently consists of 44 stations (32 on TotalErg sites).

Welding expertise for the oil & gas industry

Total and Assoil School, in charge of organising this welders training project, gave to 38 young unemployed people from Basilicata the opportunity to learn and to train on this important expertise needed for the oil & gas industry.

38 young people have obtained a welder licence

The course, entirely financed by Total, was structured into 520 hours of training divided into theoretical sessions (80 hours), in welding labs (240 hours) and in the traineeship (200 hours). 38 young people have obtained a welder licence, 22 of them are resident in the territory of Corleto Perticara, 10 in the town of Gorgoglione and 6 in Guardia Perticara town.

A training to meet the needs of the oil & gas industry

"The opportunity we gave to unemployed people with this course meets the needs of the oil & gas industry that is always looking for skilled and trained people ready to work in international contexts."

Ing. Angelo Fasanella, MD E.T.S.

A Knowledge for work opportunities all over the world

"The Masters course has many innovative aspects: the courses will be given in English only, and a lot of time will be devoted to practical exercises through the use of innovative software. Lectures will be given by academics with documented scientific experience in the sector and by the technical experts of partner companies. The Masters course seeks to train experts in the sphere of “field development”, a segment of activity covering oilfield exploration and actual oil production. This higher education initiative, which will continue in years to come, is a fundamental tool offering immediate work opportunities all over the world."

Prof. Fabrizio Agosta, of the department of Sciences of the University of Basilicata
